If you consider the logos of companies you are familiar with you’ll soon realize that most of these companies have logos that are recognizable, memorable and easy to understand, however almost across the board you’ll recognize a constant theme in all of them… they have little if anything to do with the products or services of the businesses they represent. If you consider fast food restaurants for example virtually none of them feature the image of a taco or a hamburger and if you expand that to quality restaurants in your community I’ll venture that none of them include an image of a steak or a lobster.

So why might a logo design company try and sell you a medical logo that tries to explain what your medical practice does, perhaps that is what they actually believe or perhaps they are just trying to sell their customer’s what they want… instead of what they need.

Medical logos aren’t medical advertisements

A memorable logo is a simple logo that doesn’t try and do more than what is meant for. A podiatrist focuses on feet just like a cardiologist focuses on hearts but a cardiologist doesn’t also take on the work of a podiatrist and vice versa. They are specialized medical professions and they focus on what they are trained to do. Logos are also a specialization and aren’t intended to do more than what they are designed for.

The best medical logos just feel right

A cardiologist’s logo may feature the image of a heart and a podiatrist’s logo may include an image of a foot but neither have to follow a formula that says a logo has to explain to the viewer what the medical practice does, this is what advertisements are designed to do. If you want your logo to be unique don’t box yourself in with the idea that your logo needs to spell out what your medical practice does. Instead focus on what you want your image to be and the feeling you want your logo to project to your customers.

If your medical practice is focused on geriatrics perhaps your logo should project an image that is age appropriate and give a sense of security senior citizens; likewise if you are on the other end of the spectrum and have a pediatric medical practice you might want your logo to project an image that parents and children would find secure and non-threatening.

Even great medical logo designs are forgotten

Nobody really remembers logos unless they are put in front of them so often they become imprinted in their mind and the logos that people can instantly recall have millions of dollars in marketing behind them. You aren’t Apple so no matter how awesome a logo you have it will never be remembered the way Apple’s logo is because hey let’s face it you aren’t as cool as an iPhone and nobody thinks about how awesome their doctor is until they need them.

Patients likely won’t be able to recall what your logo is even after they view it several times, so regardless of how great of a physician or medical practitioner you are a logo is not going to impact your practice the way you think it might.  How a medical logo will affect your practice isn’t by giving you instant credibility it’s by giving you a better opportunity to prove your credibility.

Your medical logo isn’t your brand image

A brand image for a doctor is made up of multiple things and the least of which is a medical logo design. A brand image is built upon the experiences people have as your patient and how they describe that experience to their friends and family.

Are you knowledgeable, are you caring and compassionate, do you provide your patients with prompt service or do they wait to see you for over an hour and when they do see you do you rush them through? These are the kind of things that will create your medical brand image. Your medical logo design will be nothing more than a reminder of the feelings people have about your medical practice.

Your medical logo design… what’s the long term prognosis?

I’ve heard it said that 50% of all doctors finish in the bottom half of their class and what I took that to mean is that their are good doctors and their are bad doctors so buyer beware. When it comes to logo designers I’d say that the vast majority of them didn’t even go to school and have no idea what it is that makes a logo a success. Some of us may have a degree on the wall but we don’t have to worry about malpractice suits when we botch a logo design but the outcome of a bad logo can certainly have adverse lasting effects.

When it comes down to who you hire to design your medical logo don’t base it solely on the verbiage that a designer can spin about logo design, base it on their portfolio. It’s one thing to say you’re a great logo designer it’s quite another to have a body of work that proves you do actually know what you are talking about.
